ABSTRACT

Public utility bus (PUB) systems and passenger behaviors drastically changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study assessed the clustered behavior of 505 PUB passengers using feature selection, K-means clustering, and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The wrapper method was seen to be the best among the six feature selection techniques through recursive feature selection with a 90% training set and a 10% testing set. It was revealed that this technique produced 26 optimal feature subsets. These features were then fed into K-means clustering and PSO to find PUB passengers' clusters. The algorithm was tested using 12 different parameter settings to find the best outcome. As a result, the optimal parameter combination produced 23 clusters. Utilizing the Pareto analysis, the study only considered the vital clusters. Specifically, five vital clusters were found to have comprehensive similarities in demographics and feature responses. The PUB stakeholders could use the cluster findings as a benchmark to improve the current system.

ABSTRACT

Depression is a common illness worldwide with doubtless severe implications. Due to the absence of early identification and treatment for depression, millions of individuals worldwide suffer from mental illnesses. It might be difficult to identify those who are experiencing mental health illnesses and to provide them with the early help that they need. Additionally, depression may be associated with thoughts of suicide. Currently, there are no clinically specific diagnostic biomarkers that can identify the severity and type of depression. In this research paper, the novel particle swarm-cuckoo search (PS-CS) optimization algorithm is proposed instead of the traditional backpropagation algorithm for training deep neural networks. The backpropagation algorithm is widely used for supervised learning in deep neural networks, but it has limitations in terms of convergence speed and the possibility of getting trapped in local optima. These problems were addressed by using a deep neural network architecture for depression detection tasks along with the PS-CS optimization technique. The PS-CS algorithm combines the strengths of both particle swarm optimization and cuckoo search algorithms, which allows for a more efficient and effective optimization of the network parameters. We also evaluated how well the suggested methods performed against the most widely used classification models, including (K-nearest neighbor) KNN, (support vector regression) SVR, and decision trees, as well as the most widely used deep learning models, including residual neural network (ResNet), visual geometry group (VGG), and simple neural network (LeNet). The findings show that the suggested method, PS-CS, in conjunction with the CNN model, outperformed all other models, achieving the maximum accuracy of 99.5%. Other models, such as the KNN, decision trees, and logistic regression, achieved lower accuracies ranging from 69% to 97%.

ABSTRACT

In this research, an effort has been put to develop an integrated predictive modeling framework to automatically estimate the rental price of Airbnb units based on listed descriptions and several accommodation-related utilities. This paper considers approximately 0.2 million listings of Airbnb units across seven European cities, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Geneva, Istanbul, London, and Milan, after the COVID-19 pandemic for predictive analysis. RoBERTa, a transfer learning framework in conjunction with K-means-based unsupervised text clustering, was used to form a homogeneous grouping of Airbnb units across the cities. Subsequently, particle swarm optimization (PSO) driven advanced ensemble machine learning frameworks have been utilized for predicting rental prices across the formed clusters of respective cities using 32 offer-related features. Additionally, explainable artificial intelligence (AI), an emerging field of AI, has been utilized to interpret the high-end predictive modeling to infer deeper insights into the nature and direction of influence of explanatory features on rental prices at respective locations. The rental prices of Airbnb units in Geneva and Brussels have appeared to be highly predictable, while the units in London and Milan have been found to be less predictable. Different types of amenity offerings largely explain the variation in rental prices across the cities.

ABSTRACT

One of the main challenges in the current pandemic is the detection of coronavirus. Conventional techniques (PT-PCR) have their limitations such as long response time and limited accessibility. On the other hand, X-ray machines are widely available and they are already digitized in the health systems. Thus, their usage is faster and more available. Therefore, in this research, we evaluate how well deep CNNs do when it comes to classifying normal versus pathological chest X-rays. Compared to the previous research, we trained our network on the largest number of images, 103,468 in total, including 5 classes such as COPD signs, COVID, normal, others and Pneumonia. We achieved COVID accuracy of 97% and overall accuracy of 81%. Additionally, we achieved classification accuracy of 84% for categorization into normal (78%) and abnormal (88%).

ABSTRACT

In early 2020, the world was shocked by the outbreak of COVID-19. World Health Organization (WHO) urged people to stay indoors to avoid the risk of infection. Thus, more people started to shop online, significantly increasing the number of e-commerce users. After some time, users noticed that a few irresponsible online retailers misled customers by hiking product prices before and during the sale, then applying huge discounts. Unfortunately, the "discounted” prices were found to be similar or only slightly lower than standard pricing. This problem occurs because users were unable to monitor product pricing due to time restrictions. This study proposes a Web application named PriceCop to help customers' monitor product pricing. PriceCop is a significant application because it offers price prediction features to help users analyse product pricing within the next day;thus, it can help users to plan before making purchases. The price prediction model is developed by using Linear Regression (LR) technique. LR is commonly used to determine outcomes and used as predictors. Least Squares Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) are used as a comparison to evaluate the accuracy of the LR technique. LSSVM-ABC was initially proposed for stock market price predictions. The results show the accuracy of pricing prediction using LSSVM-ABC is 84%, while it is 62% when LR is employed. ABC is integrated into SVM to optimize the solution and is responsible for the best solution in every iteration. Even though LSSVM-ABC predicts product pricing more accurately than LR, this technique is best trained using at least a year's worth of product prices, and the data is limited for this purpose. In the future, the dataset can be collected daily and trained for accuracy.

ABSTRACT

Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) is a Swarm Intelligence (SI) algorithm that is inspired by the cooperative behavior and hunting style of Harris Hawks in the nature. Researchers' interest in HHO is increasing day by day because it has global search capability, fast convergence speed and strong robustness. On the other hand, Emergency Vehicle Dispatching (EVD) is a complex task that requires exponential time to choose the right emergency vehicles to deploy, especially during pandemics like COVID-19. Therefore, in this work we propose to model the EVD problem as a multi-objective optimization problem where a potential solution is an allocation of patients to ambulances and the objective is to minimize the travelling cost while maximizing early treatment of critical patients. We also propose to use HHO to determine the best allocation within a reasonable amount of time. We evaluate our proposed HHO for EVD using 2 synthetic datasets. We compare the results of the proposed approach with those obtained using a modified version of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The experimental analysis shows that the proposed multi-objective HHO for EVD is very competitive and gives a substantial improvement over the enhanced PSO algorithm in terms of performance. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Human activities have been limited by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and the normal conditions of our lifestyles have changed, particularly in terms of electricity usage. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the power sector in the Lao PDR in 2020, as well as the challenge of using solar energy to supply power to the network using an optimal approach. The returns on investment of network extension and the purchase of solar energy were also evaluated. Furthermore, load conditions caused by the country's lockdown policy were analyzed. We analyzed the optimal sizing and location of solar energy using a particle swarm optimization method based on the main objective functions, with the system's power loss decreasing and its reliability improved. The results demonstrated that the suddenly reduced load from industry and commercial business did not have a large impact on its operations;however, revenue was reduced. The optimal method for connecting solar energy to a network can reduce power loss and improve system reliability. In addition, we discovered that the location and capacity of solar generation can reduce the investment costs of extensions for new lines, with the surplus power being exported.

ABSTRACT

Social media platforms, namely Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. have gained a lot of attention as users used to share their views, and post videos, audio, and pictures for social networking. In near future, understanding the meaning and analyzing this enormously rising volume and size of online data will become a necessity in order to extract valuable information from them. In a similar context, the paper proposes an analysis model in two phases namely the training and the sentiment classification using the reward-based grasshopper optimization algorithm. The training architecture and context analysis of the tweet are presented for the sentiment analysis along with the ground truth processing of emotions. The proposed algorithm is divided into two phases namely the exploitation and the exploration part and creates a reward mechanism that utilizes both phases. The proposed algorithm also uses cosine similarity, dice coefficient, and euclidean distance as the input set and further processes using the grasshopper algorithm. Finally, it presents a combination of swarm intelligence and machine learning for attribute selection in which the reward mechanism is further validated using machine learning techniques. The comparative performance in terms of precision, recall, and F-measure has been measured for the proposed model in comparison to existing swarm-based sentiment analysis works. Overall, simulation analysis showed that the proposed work based on grasshopper optimization outperformed the existing approaches for Sentiment 140 by 5.93% to 10.05% SemEval 2013 by 6.15% to 12.61% and COVID-19 tweets by 2.72% to 9.13% . Thus, demonstrating the efficiency of the context-aware sentiment analysis using the grasshopper optimization approach. ABSTRACT

Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has made outstanding achievements in image processing and detection. The recent research uses CNN to classify the medical images, but this performance depends on its hyperparameters chosen by the programmer. Choosing these parameters is a difficult process if done manually, so there is a need to find out alternative methods. To solve this problem, the researchers hybridized a CNN with particle swarm optimization (PSO) to find better values for these hyperparameters. PSO was hybridized using genetic algorithm to solve the retired particle problem. The purpose of this research is to take advantage of the achievements of deep learning in classifying medical images. The proposed model was tested with three datasets: malaria, COVID-19, and pneumonia. The model achieved 99.5%, 100%, and 99.7% accuracy for the above datasets respectively. These results were compared with the results of the standard CNN;the proposed model surpassed the standard CNN in overall performance. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

In this article, proportional‐integral (PI) control to ensure stable operation of a steam turbine in a natural gas combined cycle power plant is investigated, since active power control is very important due to the constantly changing power flow differences between supply and demand in power systems. For this purpose, an approach combining stability and optimization in PI control of a steam turbine in a natural gas combined cycle power plant is proposed. First, the regions of the PI controller, which will stabilize this power plant system in closed loop, are obtained by parameter space approach method. In the next step of this article, it is aimed to find the best parameter values of the PI controller, which stabilizes the system in the parameter space, with artificial intelligence‐based control and metaheuristic optimization. Through parameter space approach, the proposed optimization algorithms limit the search space to a stable region. The controller parameters are examined with Particle Swarm Optimization based PI, artificial bee colony based PI, genetic algorithm based PI, gray wolf optimization based PI, equilibrium optimization based PI, atom search optimization based PI, coronavirus herd immunity optimization based PI, and adaptive neuro‐fuzzy inference system based PI (ANFIS‐PI) algorithms. The optimized PI controller parameters are applied to the system model, and the transient responses performances of the system output signals are compared. Comparison results of all these methods based on parameter space approach that guarantee stability for this power plant system are presented. According to the results, ANFIS‐ PI controller is better than other methods.

ABSTRACT

Binary version of the ant lion optimizer (ALO) are suggested and utilized in wrapper-mode to pick the best feature subset for classification. ALO is a recently developed bio-inspired optimization approach that mimics ant lion hunting behavior. Furthermore, ALO balances exploration and exploitation utilizing a unique operator to explore the space of solutions adaptively for the best solution. The difficulties of a plethora of noisy, irrelevant, and misleading features, as well as the capacity to deal with incorrect and inconsistent data in real-world subjects, provide rationale for feature selection to become one of the most important requirements. A difficult machine learning problem is to choose a subset of important characteristics from a vast number of features that characterize a dataset. Choosing the most informative markers and conducting a high-accuracy classification across the data may be a difficult process, especially if the data is complex. The feature selection task is usually expressed as a bio-objective optimization challenge, with the goal of enhancing the performance of the prediction model (data training fitting quality) while decreasing the number of features used. Various evaluation criteria are employed to determine the success of the suggested approach. The findings show that the suggested chaotic binary algorithm can explore the feature space for optimum feature set efficiently. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has caused havoc throughout the world in the last two years by infecting over 455 million people. Development of automatic diagnosis software tools for rapid screening of COVID-19 via clinical imaging such as X-ray is vital to combat this pandemic. An optimized deep learning model is designed in this paper to perform automatic diagnosis on the chest X-ray (CXR) images of patients and classify them into normal, pneumonia and COVID-19 cases. A convolutional neural network (CNN) is employed in optimized deep learning model given its excellent performances in feature extraction and classification. A particle swarm optimization with multiple chaotic initialization scheme (PSOMCIS) is also designed to fine tune the hyperparameters of CNN, ensuring the proper training of network. The proposed deep learning model, namely PSOMCIS-CNN, is evaluated using a public database consists of the CXR images with normal, pneumonia and COVID-19 cases. The proposed PSOMCIS-CNN is revealed to have promising performances for automatic diagnosis of COVID-19 cases by producing the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision and F1 score values of 97.78%, 97.77%, 98.8%, 97.77% and 97.77%, respectively. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

The novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) is a respiratory disease of great concern in terms of its dissemination and severity, for which X-ray imaging-based diagnosis is one of the effective complementary diagnostic methods. It is essential to be able to separate and identify lesions from their pathology images regardless of the computer-aided diagnosis techniques. Therefore, image segmentation in the pre-processing stage of COVID-19 pathology images would be more helpful for effective analysis. In this paper, to achieve highly effective pre-processing of COVID-19 pathological images by using multi-threshold image segmentation (MIS), an enhanced version of ant colony optimization for continuous domains (MGACO) is first proposed. In MGACO, not only a new move strategy is introduced, but also the Cauchy-Gaussian fusion strategy is incorporated. It has been accelerated in terms of convergence speed and has significantly enhanced its ability to jump out of the local optimum. Furthermore, an MIS method (MGACO-MIS) based on MGACO is developed, where it applies the non-local means, 2D histogram as the basis, and employs 2D Kapur's entropy as the fitness function. To demonstrate the performance of MGACO, we qualitatively analyze it in detail and compare it with other peers on 30 benchmark functions from IEEE CEC2014, which proves that it has a stronger capability of solving problems over the original ant colony optimization for continuous domains. To verify the segmentation effect of MGACO-MIS, we conducted a comparison experiment with eight other similar segmentation methods based on real pathology images of COVID-19 at different threshold levels. The final evaluation and analysis results fully demonstrate that the developed MGACO-MIS is sufficient to obtain high-quality segmentation results in the COVID-19 image segmentation and has stronger adaptability to different threshold levels than other methods. Therefore, it has been well-proven that MGACO is an excellent swarm intelligence optimization algorithm, and MGACO-MIS is also an excellent segmentation method.

ABSTRACT

Social media, like Twitter, is a data repository, and people exchange views on global issues like the COVID-19 pandemic. Social media has been shown to influence the low acceptance of vaccines. This work aims to identify public sentiments concerning the COVID-19 vaccines and better understand the individual's sensitivities and feelings that lead to achievement. This work proposes a method to analyze the opinion of an individual's tweet about the COVID-19 vaccines. This paper introduces a sigmoidal particle swarm optimization (SPSO) algorithm. First, the performance of SPSO is measured on a set of 12 benchmark problems, and later it is deployed for selecting optimal text features and categorizing sentiment. The proposed method uses TextBlob and VADER for sentiment analysis, CountVectorizer, and term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) vectorizer for feature extraction, followed by SPSO-based feature selection. The Covid-19 vaccination tweets dataset was created and used for training, validating, and testing. The proposed approach outperformed considered algorithms in terms of accuracy. Additionally, we augmented the newly created dataset to make it balanced to increase performance. A classical support vector machine (SVM) gives better accuracy for the augmented dataset without a feature selection algorithm. It shows that augmentation improves the overall accuracy of tweet analysis. After the augmentation performance of PSO and SPSO is improved by almost 7% and 5%, respectively, it is observed that simple SVM with 10-fold cross-validation significantly improved compared to the primary dataset. © 2023 Tech Science Press. ABSTRACT

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), instigated by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has hugely impacted global public health. To identify and intervene in critically ill patients early, this paper proposes an efficient, intelligent prediction model based on the machine learning approach, which combines the improved whale optimization algorithm (RRWOA) with the k-nearest neighbor (KNN) classifier. In order to improve the problem that WOA is prone to fall into local optimum, an improved version named RRWOA is proposed based on the random contraction strategy (RCS) and the Rosenbrock method. To verify the capability of the proposed algorithm, RRWOA is tested against nine classical metaheuristics, nine advanced metaheuristics, and seven well-known WOA variants based on 30 IEEE CEC2014 competition functions, respectively. The experimental results in mean, standard deviation, the Friedman test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test are considered, proving that RRWOA won first place on 18, 24, and 25 test functions, respectively. In addition, a binary version of the algorithm, called BRRWOA, is developed for feature selection problems. An efficient prediction model based on BRRWOA and KNN classifier is proposed and compared with seven existing binary metaheuristics based on 15 datasets of UCI repositories. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm obtains the smallest fitness value in eleven datasets and can solve combinatorial optimization problems, indicating that it still performs well in discrete cases. More importantly, the model was compared with five other algorithms on the COVID-19 dataset. The experiment outcomes demonstrate that the model offers a scientific framework to support clinical diagnostic decision-making. Therefore, RRWOA is an effectively improved optimizer with efficient value.

ABSTRACT

According to the World Health Organization, millions of infections and a lot of deaths have been recorded worldwide since the emergence of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Since 2020, a lot of computer science researchers have used convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to develop interesting frameworks to detect this disease. However, poor feature extraction from the chest X-ray images and the high computational cost of the available models introduce difficulties for an accurate and fast COVID-19 detection framework. Moreover, poor feature extraction has caused the issue of 'the curse of dimensionality', which will negatively affect the performance of the model. Feature selection is typically considered as a preprocessing mechanism to find an optimal subset of features from a given set of all features in the data mining process. Thus, the major purpose of this study is to offer an accurate and efficient approach for extracting COVID-19 features from chest X-rays that is also less computationally expensive than earlier approaches. To achieve the specified goal, we design a mechanism for feature extraction based on shallow conventional neural network (SCNN) and used an effective method for selecting features by utilizing the newly developed optimization algorithm, Q-Learning Embedded Sine Cosine Algorithm (QLESCA). Support vector machines (SVMs) are used as a classifier. Five publicly available chest X-ray image datasets, consisting of 4848 COVID-19 images and 8669 non-COVID-19 images, are used to train and evaluate the proposed model. The performance of the QLESCA is evaluated against nine recent optimization algorithms. The proposed method is able to achieve the highest accuracy of 97.8086% while reducing the number of features from 100 to 38. Experiments prove that the accuracy of the model improves with the usage of the QLESCA as the dimensionality reduction technique by selecting relevant features.

ABSTRACT

Feature selection is one of the most important challenges in machine learning and data science. This process is usually performed in the data preprocessing phase, where the data is transformed to a proper format for further operations by machine learning algorithm. Many real-world datasets are highly dimensional with many irrelevant, even redundant features. These kinds of features do not improve classification accuracy and can even shrink down performance of a classifier. The goal of feature selection is to find optimal (or sub-optimal) subset of features that contain relevant information about the dataset from which machine learning algorithms can derive useful conclusions. In this manuscript, a novel version of firefly algorithm (FA) is proposed and adapted for feature selection challenge. Proposed method significantly improves performance of the basic FA, and also outperforms other state-of-the-art metaheuristics for both, benchmark bound-constrained and practical feature selection tasks. Method was first validated on standard unconstrained benchmarks and later it was applied for feature selection by using 21 standard University of California, Irvine (UCL) datasets. Moreover, presented approach was also tested for relatively novel COVID-19 dataset for predicting patients health, and one microcontroller microarray dataset. Results obtained in all practical simulations attest robustness and efficiency of proposed algorithm in terms of convergence, solutions' quality and classification accuracy. More precisely, the proposed approach obtained the best classification accuracy on 13 out of 21 total datasets, significantly outperforming other competitor methods.

ABSTRACT

Digital growth during the Corona pandemic has generated massive data. The Hadoop in big data has to be more efficient in resource handling and job scheduling. This article proposes the improved job scheduler which is more efficient in fair job scheduling even with the heterogeneous resources. The faster job execution depends upon the localization too. The nearer the slots are, the faster is the execution. So, this article proposes a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm with fair scheduling and data locality as the two objectives in job scheduling. The dominant resource fairness policy in Hadoop YARN is updated by hybrid generalized particle swarm optimization and simulated annealing for minimum locality and maximum fairness in scheduling. The algorithm is tested on various workloads for heterogeneous resources.

ABSTRACT

The Coronavirus, known as COVID-19, which appeared in 2019 in China, has significantly affected the global health and become a huge burden on health institutions all over the world. These effects are continuing today. One strategy for limiting the virus's transmission is to have an early diagnosis of suspected cases and take appropriate measures before the disease spreads further. This work aims to diagnose and show the probability of getting infected by the disease according to textual clinical data. In this work, we used five machine learning techniques (GWO_MLP, GWO_CMLP, MGWO_MLP, FDO_MLP, FDO_CMLP) all of which aim to classify Covid-19 patients into two categories (Positive and Negative). Experiments showed promising results for all used models. The applied methods showed very similar performance, typically in terms of accuracy. However, in each tested dataset, FDO_MLP and FDO_CMLP produced the best results with 100% accuracy. The other models' results varied from one experiment to the other. It is concluded that the models on which the FDO algorithm was used as a learning algorithm had the possibility of obtaining higher accuracy. However, it is found that FDO has the longest runtime compared to the other algorithms. The link to the Covid 19 models is found here: https://github.com/Tarik4Rashid4/covid19models.

ABSTRACT

In mitigating the peak demand, the energy authority in Malaysia has introduced the enhanced time of use (EToU). However, the number of participants joining the programs is less than expected. Due to that reason, this study investigated the investment benefit in terms of electricity cost reduction when consumers subscribe to the EToU tariff scheme. The significant consumers from industrial tariff types have been focused on where the load profiles were collected from the incoming providers' power stations. Meanwhile, ant colony optimization (ACO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are applied to optimize the load profiles reflecting EToU tariff prices. The proposed method had shown a reduction in electricity cost, and the most significant performance has been recorded congruently. For a maximum 30% load adjustment using ACO optimization, the electricity costs have been decreased by 10% (D type of tariff), 16% (E1 type of tariff), 9% (E2 kind of tariff), and 1.13% (E3 type of tariff) when compared to the existing conventional tariff. The cost-benefit of the EToU tariff switching has been identified where the simple payback period (SPP) is below one year for all the industrial types of consumers.
